Upgrading an old PC: Any insight on hardware compatibility?

I'm looking to replace a 9500gs graphics card with a dead fan with a PNY GTX 650 2gb card. Also I am upgrading the power supply from what I believe is a 230W to a Coolmax 600W power supply.
It is a slim factor PC from about 6 years ago.

Other info:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit SP1
    System Model: HP-Pavilion KZ850AV-ABA s3500t
CPU: 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Motherboard: Foxxconn Irvine HP P/N

Pretty sure the RAM and HD capacity isn't important compatibility-wise and I don't have any more specific information on them.

Currently I have the case open with the covering that would direct airflow over the heatsink on the graphics card off. I've been using a small fan to just blow on to the parts to keep it cool.

The heatsink on what I'm assuming is the northbridge of the motherboard (please correct me if I'm wrong about what the part is exactly.) also overheats very easily.

Solution
You have six years old factory pc and you want to upgrade it ?
Why ? It is not worth. Build a new one.
Better case , better power , faster cpu , good video card..
You are half way there to a new build. PSU + video card.
Now you really need only cpu + MoBo. + HDD + Case.
New case means better cooling. Or if you are on tight budget then buy ned case psu + video card. If noth bridge is getting hot you kind need better airflow to case.

I was wondering do PNY 650 fit in that case? maybe it needs low profile card?
New LGA 1150...

New LGA 1150 motherboards arereally cheap so new cpu + MoBo is not so expensive.
And cheaper you may find AMD cpu.

Yeah I really do want to build a new one but I'm considering this to maybe just be a temporary fix until I can afford to buy the new parts. You are correct that that card absolutely won't fit in the case but I've got it opened up right now with a fan blowing on it.

So if I got a new case too like you said I wouln't have any problem dropping all the current parts into that? Like if I buy a mid atx case the micro atx motherboard will go into that fine? I'm buying the parts through Shopmyexchange.com so my choices for parts is pretty limited right now.

I do not see any issues with dropping old parts to new case. Just make sure case supports ATX / mATX and maybe mITX MoBo's- then you can fit there any futue mobo you find.
Just put in link what case you are looking and someone can look that it is sure fit.
How much is good price for case now? :)

The case you picked out is in my price range for it. Any particular reason you picked that one though?

I was a little disappointed with the website I'm using for buying my parts because they didn't have cases other than some barebones computers that are really ugly.

it was cheap now. Good build quality. Not anything fancy stuff just good for price tag.

Ok :) hope it looks good on or under desk :) And works well too :) Good luck!
