I was just wondering if it is 'safe' just to unplug the power supply cords from one of the gpus when not in use or would I have to remove the entire card

Solution
Providing the machine is not running and you have turned off the power supply, it's fine.

You do know you can also just disable SLI in the Nvidia Control Panel as well?

will that turn off the 2nd card because ideally id like to save on power when I can (i knw having sli isnt really ideal for that already)

No, it wont actually iscolate the power supply to the card, but it will prevent it from running when you are playing games. If you wanted to you could disconnect the PCI-e cables and then take a look in your BIOS to see if you can diable the PCI-e slot the GPU is installed in, and that should stop the beeping that Mousemonkey mentioned. =)

But really the easiest way would be to remove the card entirely. It's not that difficult to remove a GPU.

so removing the power cables from the card is not enough?

rather than removing the entire card (cause thats a lot of effort) can i just pull the power cords attached to the card? and it wont ruin anything?

Jeez, how much is your power where you are? GPUs downclock themselves when not in use and don't use much power at idle.

If its that expensive that you would actually care about that little of power savings surely it would be more beneficial to buy something like an xbox or a cheapo PC (at say a yardsale or something on the cheap) for just internet browsing then use your main for gaming. Or the xbox for gaming then your pc for browsing.

Like I say, the only way to completely stop the GPU using power would be to remove it completely, as the PCI-e slot also tranferrs power. But removing the PCI-e cables will lower power usage by the card considerably.
