Doing my first build:
I am gonna get:
- i7-4770 processor
- Maximus VI Gene (mATX)
what's the optimal choice of RAM?
It's not a gaming rig and I want it to last for quite a while. I have done a bit of research and I think I'm going for 16GB. Not sure about the frequency, latency etc. though.

I7's only shine over I5's in certain applications, ensure you will benefit from it or save a few pennies
lower the latecies the better, higher the frequency the better, but when you mix the two frequencies/vs timings, it gets a little tougher
get some decent branded ram, that offers a good RMA service, if oyur not gaming, perhaps go for mid priced ram and perhaps increase the quanitity, although, depending on what you plan to do with the machine, 16GB should be more than adequate, at least for a while

Thanks Alan, I do 3D designs, scientific simulations, that kinda stuff, which is partly why I opted for i7-4770 as it has hyper-threading which might be handier in the near future. As for what I am planning to do with the RAM, I am planning to do some experiments with Swap, etc. as I read somewhere recently. Clearly will have SSD drives too.

I should say my mobo has 4 x DIMM slots so can complement what I buy in the future I guess. Any thoughts?

Thanks. I should say that this is a mATX system I am setting up and this is the case i'm planning to use. Will I have any problems fitting that TridentX RAM in the case?
Just wondering...

Thanks mate. Again, considering that this is a mAtx build and given the case's included fans: Cooling Bottom: 120mm x 2 and Cooling Rear: 120mm x 1 , will I need to be concerned about the possible increase in temperature in the system by the higher RAM frequency? I have seen people mentioning it on the forums.
