2 SSDs vs 1 SSD

So I am doing my first build here. I am going pure SSD for my drives. The actual media storage will be on external ones. Planning to get SSD drives of 256GB capacity, which should satisfy my needs. ( I think!) Question is, should I get two 128 GB ones or a single 256 GB?

Solution
If you're installing two os on one drive, install linux last. the boot loader for linux is much better than the windows one especially for multiple operating systems. or jsut reinstall grub after installing win. also im not too sure about needing to back up "very frequently" you should be backing up at least once a day anyway. also what was once true for mechanical drives in raid, isn't necessarily true for ssds. since there are no moving parts they can be more reliable. as for 2 vs 1. in theory, two in raid will be faster but in reality the performance gain will probably be minimal for most uses. source: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485.html

A single 256GB ssd would be cheaper than 2 128GB SSDs. If you are running RAID 0 which increases read and write speed, the 2 128GB SSDs would do the job, but the RAID 0 drive need to be backed up very frequently. Still recommend single 256GB SSd

It's one 256 vs two 128 so the size isn't the issue here.

1 256GB SSD would be cheaper than 2 128GB SSDs. both have the same capacities. But the 2 128GB SSDs would have 2 differnt names on the computer like SSD 1 is drive C and SSD 2 is drive D. 1 256GB SSD would be recognised as only one drive unless you partition it into 2 partitions.

I see. thanks!
I should also say that I'm planning to dual boot with Ubuntu. Will it be smarter to use two separate drives?

I would get one 256 GB drive and install it with 2 partitions. That way, as you needs increase or decrease for each OS you can shrink or expand the partitions to suit your needs. With 2 drives, you would not have this flexibility and you would be forever tied to your original drive sizes.
