Thoughts, comments, advice?

The CPU and GFX Card will most likely receive some OCing, if that will affect the power draw.

The XFX 550W is higher quality. 550W should be just about sufficient, but if you want extra safety margin I'd recommend the Antec HCG-620M. It uses the same internal design as the XFX 550W, just with a little higher capacity and modular cabling.

If your going to overclock grab the CX750M.The M versions of the CX750 are better made than the 2 previous versions of the unit.

The Antec (SEASONIC) mentioned above is a decent choice also.

how about this XFX @ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207022
better or worse than the Antec?
---
just watched the review/read specs for the antec--looking pretty good.
---
now its between the Corsair 750W and the Antec 620W (why such an odd voltage?)
--
is one noticeably quieter than the other or offer better airflow?

Nah, it still uses poor capacitors.

Actually, the "M" versions use all-Japanese capacitors, even though all of them are built by CWT for Corsair.
Still, I'd probably rather have the Seasonic-built XFX or Antec. As to size, I used to mine with an overclocked (1130MHz) HD7970, and running the GPU at ~98%, it pulled only 312W from its UPS. The CPU would have been near-idle though. Playing games, you'd probably use a little more, but not much (the added CPU load would be offset by decreased GPU load).
I used a 550W Truepower New. Its fan did not become notably loud, so it wasn't working too hard.

with upgrading in mind, would I be better off getting a higher wattage PSU for the next batch of GPUs or will the next batch (from AMD or Nvidia) be at the same or lower power consumption rate?

How does a single Japanese capacitor on the primary make it all-Japanese capacitors when all of the capacitors on the secondary side are all cheap Taiwanese CapXon?

No they don't. I've seen a shot of a Corsair CX750M internals, where the primary cap was a crummy 85C rated one.

Hmmm, interesting, and good to know. I read some reviews of the smaller ones, which found all-Japanese capacitors.
In any case, although I know they've made some good ones, when I see "CWT" I give it a pass; no reason to buy theirs when Seasonic, Delta, and even FSP are making PSUs.
