Hi,

I have an old pc that I've hooked up for my parents to use. The problem is that it doesn't have a Wifi adaptor and I have uncapped ADSL at our house. I've had a look at local stores and the adaptors seem really expensive. It works out to 45 Euros for the cheapest one I could find. I do however have 2 fairly average 3G modems. My question is, can I use a 3G modem as a wifi adaptor on that old pc to hook up to my ADSL modem? I'm trying to save some money and I appreciate all feedback I receive. Cheers.

Solution
No, 3G adapters operate at a different frequency than network wireless. Look for a USB wireless adapter -- I've used a lot of TP-Link and they are a lot cheaper than that.

Hi,

Not sure I understand your problem statement. Do you have a WiFi router hooked up to the ADSL and want the old PC to connect to that? Is this old PC for your parents in the same house as the ADSL connection? If not, what distance?

For typical home use, standard USB WiFi dongles run pretty cheap on Amazon.de or co.uk. That would enable the old PC to get online, assuming its in the same house.

Regarding your question: perhaps not. Extrapolating from a mobile phone analogy. A 3G enabled mobile phone is not necessarily a WiFi enabled phone, as different types of radios handle the respective signals.
