PC super slow after reformat/reinstall

Last night I started a reformat/reinstall of Windows 7 Ultimate on my PC, and now it has gone completely to hell. It's been slow for months, and I've been putting it off because I had so much to back up. We moved, so when we got our internet set up here I figured now was the time. So last night I popped the disk in and let it do it's thing...when it finished, I installed Chrome (which I had downloaded on my laptop and saved the exe to a jump drive) and tried to run Windows Update. WU gave me error 80072ee2. I googled and tried everything I possibly could to no avail. So I started over. I figured maybe something went wrong during installation. Started back up, and I'm still having the same problem, but now worse. Chrome won't install. Not from the Chrome exe or while installing Avast. Internet Explorer is CRAWLING. Worse than '95 dial up! Windows Update is still not working. Can't install graphics card driver. And now it keeps randomly disconnecting me from the internet...I'm right beside it on the laptop -_- [granted, my usb wireless card MAY be the problem there...who knows]

My PC is several years old and definitely in need of some upgrades, I know, but it's just not in the budget right now [with a second birthday and Christmas coming up] but here are my specs:

Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz
8 GB DDR2
Nvidia GeForce GT120 [that's the real kicker]

Sorry for the wall'o text, but does anyone have any idea what my problem may be and/or what I could do to fix it?
I also should maybe mention that I have done reformat/reinstalls a million times [on multiple computers; my dad owns a computer sales/service shop in town and I worked for him for a bit] and never had trouble like this. Typically all the trouble is before the decision to reformat, heh.

Thanks in advance!

Solution
make sure you install the intel chipset drivers then the lan and sound drivers for your mb. check that the cpu and gpu fan are working and are not dust bound. use hardware monitor check the gpu and cpu temps. use hdtune read your hard drive smart info for warnings and errors. run a drive fitness tests. run memtest on your system. if the mb a few years old it may be time to replace the cmos battery. check on the mb and power supply for leaking caps.

You nailed it and I'm a moron. Not sure how I forgot about the chipset drivers, but that seemed to fix most of it. Got a different error with Windows Update now, but I'm running chkdsk right now to see if that helps it.

I'll have to find that. Is it a download? I got rid of the one error, but the first one is back, so I'm going to have to find another way. The internet is still being very slow...but it's just the internet, even after I got Chrome up and running. Everything else is moving very quickly. Hopefully that will be resolved with the updates though.
