I'm experiencing some weird stuff with my external HDD, a WD My Passport 2TB (black).

A little history, this HDD is used across OS (Mac & Windows) and for that reason I formatted it into FAT32 (no ExFAT when I did it). My main use is pretty much, movie archive of all kinds (mainly anime).

This afternoon, when I tried copying some new anime series (folder) I found to the HDD from a MacBook, it managed to copy, but it also changed the name of 1 file.

e.g. "[Doki] Guilty Crown - 01v2 (1920x1080 Hi10P BD FLAC) [39565C0B].mkv" is turned into "_DOKI~19.MKV"

Multiple times trying to copy seems to somehow affect my older folders (I got 4 other folders where this same thing happened, even though they didn't have this problem when I copied them long ago). I managed to rename 2 of the changed files back, through some luck. However, there's 1 file that keeps changing back to this weird name no matter what I do.

I tried doing this with another series, and the same thing happened. Several things I noticed is that:
- It only happens to 1 file per folder
- It has a form of "_[first 4 letters]~[random 2 numbers, usually the episode #].MKV" (e.g. _ABCD~13)
- If I try to change it back to its original name, it reverts back to that form, or the name is already taken, unless I do some weird method of renaming it (with some luck) but I still can rename it into other names like "aoidjaoijf.mkv"
- It seems to only do so when I copy folders with the files in it. I tried copying individual files, and it doesn't seem to be affected. However, as soon as I move that file into the copied folder (in the HDD), the name automatically changes.

I've never had this problem with whatever movie file I put into the HDD until today so I'm really at a loss as to why this happened (I'm not that good with computers either).

Any clues/ideas/advice on this problem?

Also, this is my first time posting here, so I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong thread or breaking the rules here and there (I figured it might be HDD's error since the files are fine before copied to HDD).

Thank you!

This can happen a few ways if I remember right. If the overall path was too long it would revert to using the 8.3 naming convention was the big one I think.
Could also be that too many files begin the same but I cant recall how many files that needed.

Try copying it to a folder right on the root. ex: H:\DokiVids\....

Thanks for the suggestion. Based on what I read about 8.3 naming, it does seem closest to what I've been having.

Some "inconsistencies" that I find is:
- When I change the original filename a little bit, it does change. However, when I fix the change that I made (from A2 changed to 01 and change it back to A2), it reverts back to the 8.3 naming.

e.g. Original: [Doki] Persona 4 The Animation - 19v2 (1280x720 h264 BD AAC) [4F1C06A2].mkv
Auto-renamed: _DOKI~19.MKV
Slightly changed: [Doki] Persona 4 The Animation - 19v2 (1280x720 h264 BD AAC) [4F1C0601].mkv

- If 8.3 naming is the culprit, then when I transfer any new folders, 1 of the files inside should be changed to that form, correct? But when I encountered the problem yesterday, I managed to copy 2 other folders without any name change.

I also tried copying the folders to the root (assuming I did it correctly), which is "External:\[Folder]"?
It doesn't work. It's probably because most of my files begin with " [ " ?

Thank you so much for the help!
