Hello,

I have a dell 5050 and I can't figure out how to turn on wireless capabilities. I pressed fn and the button and it shows it's on but the connection has not been established. In network sharing is has the X between the computer and the home symbols. Help!!!

Solution
Connect your Dell laptop by ethernet cable to the router if you need to download something from Dell.

As for the red 'X' on the wireless adapter in Device Manager, not usually a driver issue. More likely to be a faulty adapter.
As I said, easiest fix for that is to buy a USB plug-in wireless adapter but don't plug it in until you've installed the software supplied with it and it prompts you to plug it in.
Look in Device Manager and check as below:

1) If you see an item listed with an error symbol against it, try re-installing the wireless driver from Dell's website.

OR

2) If there are no error symbols and no wireless adapter is listed, that indicates possible failure of the wireless adapter.
The easiest (and cheapest) fix for that is to buy a USB wireless adapter.

It has a red X on the network settings and I try to do a diagnosis and it says to connect but it won't. It says that connections are available but to turn on wireless capabilities. I had the provider check and there is a signal to the modem. I will try to download it on dell
