Web browser message "Server sent no data"

I'm unable to connect to any website using my browers (Chrome and Opera). However, my VPN connection works, WINSCP works and I can ping sites like mail.google.com, so my DNS works.

Both wireless and cable connections to my home router give the same result. Other PCs attached to this router work fine. The PC worked fine when I switched it off last night.

I have switched the firewall off.

I'm running Windows 7 on my three year old HP Pavilion laptop.

Any suggestions as to where to look would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Paul

Control Panel>Internet Options icon>Connection tab>LAN button. Put a tick in "Automatically detect settings" and remove any ticks in the Proxy boxes in the lower pane. Restart the system and try again.

Thank you. That box is already ticked.

Due to time constraints I have now paid Microsoft to resolve the issue.
They say there were some corrupted registry entries. But that is all I know at the moment.

So I think this question is now closed. Thank you.
