I recently got some new components from a friend (An ASRock motherboard with an FX-4170 and a Sapphire HD 6870), and set it all up in a nice case with a 600 watt PSU. However, I've been having random complete losses of power, after which the power supply has to be reset. My friend never had that problem, and I'm sure all of my components are seated correctly. My CPU temps with IntelBurnTest weren't great (mid 70s according to SpeedFan), but even that isn't hot enough to trigger a shutdown due to overheating, and actual usage should be a lot cooler than that.
It usually happens when I'm playing Grand Theft Auto IV, but not always. I'm not sure about the GPU's temperatures (I will check on it soon when I get a chance) but it has happened when the GPU isn't being stressed at all (on the desktop, or at the main menu of a game).
What could it be? I'm thinking it might just be a defective power supply, since the (listed) wattage is nice and high enough to accommodate my components. The thing is, the same issue occurred using my old GPU (an HD 4650), which makes me doubt the PSU's fault. Could a physical problem with the motherboard/GPU/CPU cause this? Is it possible that the wall outlet I'm using is insufficient? I haven't reinstalled windows soon (although I plan to), so could a driver issue be at fault (even if there are no blue screens)?
Thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate taking the time to read over and respond to this.
(I'm actually posting this for my friend, and speaking from his point of view to simplify things)
