I've just build a new system, everything works fine except for the gpu getting really hot under load (afterburner shows 99/100% usage playing far cry 3) with gpu fan on 100% with afterburner (87 celcius). Idle temp is 35. I didn't overclock the gpu.

CPU gets 43 degrees on 100% load with prime95 small fft.

I've got 3 case fans, all working at 100%, it is really noisy..
Front & side intake, back out.

Specs:
Asrock 970 pro3 r2.0
AMD FX-8320
Cooler Master Hyper 412s
Samsung 840 EVO 120gb
Cooler Master K280 - midtower

XFX Radeon HD 7870 Double Dissipation Black Edition

What the hell is wrong with my gpu?

Yes that is hot for a new card although within specs for it. Looks like your airflow is correct but try with the side panel off and see if it changes anything.
How is the PSU mounted with the fan facing down sucking air through the bottom or up sucking air out of the case robbing the GPU of fresh air?

The fan of the psu is facing down so this should have no influence.
Taking the side panel off has no effect, maybe a degree down but thats really it.

Can this be done with the standard thermal paste (ie the paste that i got from the evo 412s)?

I bought the card with the intention over overclocking it but it seems like that won't be possible if it already reaches this temperatures on standard clock..
