Advice Regarding a NAS

Hello all,

I've been thinking lately that I want to either do one of two things regarding a NAS:

1. DIY NAS
2. Buy the Synology DS213J Diskless

What I'm looking for is to mostly have some storage space with the ability to stream music or movies, while also being power efficient. A few of the movies are 720p, The amount of people able to access the NAS would be approximately 5 people, but maybe only 2 of the 5 people streaming movies.

I'm afraid that the DS213J won't be powerful enough to steam movies, without it being choppy. If there are other pre-built NAS that you have in mind, feel free to mention them.

Regarding HDD's, I am looking to buy 2x 3 TB WD Greens or Reds. I will probably be setting up the drives for RAID 1. I may look to add more drives in the future.

If going the DIY route, I'm afraid I'm not too "knowledgeable" in hardware compatibility, and whatnot. From what I've read I want to get a cpu that's at least 1 GHz, and 2 GB of ram is fair enough, though I think I'd want to get 4 GB of ram. As for a psu, I've read that 200 watts is more than enough. ( I actually have a spare 500w one, but that's a bit too much from what I've learned)

I've also looked up a bit regarding FreeNAS, but from what it looks like I'd end up spending upwards towards $700+ since generally you'd look to get 8GB of ram for the ZFS, and a more powerful cpu and whatnot.

Putting the bits and pieces together are really what make the DIY route fun for me, and I've heard you can save some cash with the DIY route.

Any questions, comments, would be more than helpful! Thank you for your help!

Don't worry, the Synology DS213J is powerful enough for the streaming. And it's easy to set up an handle. A FreeNas box is fun if you are interested in Linux and to set the box up, not only to use it.
If you can afford it, go for a four slot box, like the DS413j and set it up with three disks in raid5. With 3*2TB you get 4TB storage and the basic security of raid5.

Thanks for the quick response! I will definitely keep that in mind, as I know that RAID 5 will be more safe than RAID 1. Do you perhaps know of any DIY NAS boxes that are fair in price comparable to a 4 slot box premade?
