I plan to build a gaming PC, and I want to take it to friends houses, LAN's etc so it needs to be mini-itx.

I want to know if I can use the Pentium G3220 and a HD 7970 and it not bottleneck too much. Is this a good idea or should I buy an i3 or i5?

More about : intel g3220 bottleneck amd 7970

I would try to find a cheap i5 (they are recommended for gaming):

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-2320 3.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($170.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $170.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Thanks for the quick reply. I will have a look at the i5's. Do you recommend any budget oriented motherboards for 1150 or 1155?

Get and AMD fx 6300 if your on a budget, or FX 8350 which is best for gaming, streaming, video editing, using more than 1 monitor, and future proofing as the new generation of consoles will be using 8 cores, making the i3, i5, and some i7 redundant with there 4 cores.

I was gonna get the FX-6300 but I needed something smaller. No AM3+ mini itx motherboards exist, and the micro atx ones aren't good enough.

True true...my recommended motherboard/cpu combo...

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-4130 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($93.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($94.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $188.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-03 14:54 EDT-0400)

This would be a really solid build, for about the same price as the i5....i agree with jaslion fx will be better for budget, also they overclock alot higher then i5's would.

I suppose I could put up with a bit more of a struggle carrying it around if it meant a lower total cost.

If they do exist, could you please find a link to it? It would be very helpful, but I doubt they exist.

Some of the budget micro atx boards are good enough to clock an fx 6300 to at least fx 6350 speeds. FX 6350 outperforms an i3 3225. An FX 8320 is an option that is close to i5 performance.

If you truly want mini-itx, you are best going with an Intel i5. A 760k would beat a Pentium G, and reach a low end i3 at best.

Is there much of a difference between the fx 4130 and the fx 6300? Is it worth the extra £20?

Yes one is a quad core and one is a six core, however for gaming you will never notice a difference. I do agree with logainofhades though the i5 would be a better (more expensive) route but difference would be really noticeable.

Yes it is worth it. The FX 4130 is a bulldozer chip and the FX 6300 is a piledriver based chip which is much improved. Faildozer was worse than Phenom II.

With my budget, I can afford an OC'd hd 7850 2gb with the i5.
With the FX-4130, I can afford a OC'd 7950.
I assume I would get higher FPS if I went down the AMD route, correct?

Looks from what your doing, you need to find a case first and make sure the 7970 will even fit, along with the power supply, hdds, fans, and cables.

then you can see if its a mini itx or micro atx size case that you will be working with.

Edit: just a quick look, mini itx dimensions 9.4" x 8.2" x 15.8"
micro atx 13.80" x 11.20" x 9.00"
not sure what is critical about making sure its a mini itx vs micro atx.

I won't forget. How high is power consumption on an OC'd fx-6300? Will a 600w power supply be enough?
