you will need a new motherboard and ram as well. i3's dont fit into a 775 socket.

Instead of wasting money on a dual core i3 which will be in the grave by next year, at least get an AMD fx 6300, same price, 6 cores.

You can't. The chips are physically different in the socket they use on the motherboard. An I3 is a 1155 or 1150 socket and the E2200 is a socket 775. different pins, different sockets.
