Can't get my optical drive to read

I just got a new motherboard and cpu (Asus M5A97 r2.0 and AMD FX8120). I also had to get a new optical drive because my old one wasn't sata. I can get to BIOS and it recognizes the drive, but it won't open by itself or read my Windows cd when I open it with a paperclip. The light on the drive turns on. I thought it was a dud drive, but I exchanged it and the new one isn't working either. I flashed BIOS to the latest version and that didn't fix it either. What should I do next?

I have the latest drivers, but what I didn't have was enough force on the power cord to the drive. Whoops. I guess it had enough of a connection to power the light but not do much else. This is my first major upgrade that I've done so I'm afraid to break stuff by pressing too hard. Thanks for your reply!
