Current specs:

GPU - GeForce 8800 GTX (old as shit)
Mobo - Asus P6X58-E WS
CPU - Intel I7 970 hex core 3.2 ghz overclocked to 4.2
Ram - Patriot Signature 1600 6x4 (24gb)
Antec Khuler 620
Samsung 250 gb SSD
2x4 TB mech drives
PSU - Rosewill 1000w

I'm looking for a compatible graphics card for the 500-600 range. I've read that single cards > SLI, but i have no problems going with SLI as my case stays pretty cool and I'm not worried at all about the extra duties on the PSU. Any suggestions?

I see that you are a NVdia fan, so you might not like my suggestion:
A AMD Radeon HD7870 or AMD Radeon 7950 would work pretty great but since its a top notch CPU you have there, you can probably go all the way to the 7990(Most powerful AMD card, I believe).
Good Luck with the build! :)

Oh and I heard taht Rosewill sucks at making PSUs. Go with a Crosair, they are awesome ;)

minimum/7950/7970 on up for 1 monitor.................... more monitors will need a bigger card/cards and more vram at the higher res. are you sure about those extra monitors?.............

You can go for a Nvidia GTX 780 as single card option (around 600-650).
The SLI options can be , two GTX 770's or two GTX 760's . All will serve you well. The psu you have has plenty power, you dont need to worry about the extra duties on the PSU

The psu i have works pretty good but it's only been about 4 months. Funny story, when I was trying to wire everything up, i accidentally took a 6 pin connector that was already plugged into the psu, routed it through the case cutouts, and then back into the psu (not paying attention)... got a funny smell the first time i tried to boot, and some nice sparks the second time. Still works fine after all that, though haha

I don't have my heart set on them or anything like that, but it would be cool to have a tri-monitor setup

Your CPU is fine, but for more Monitors and some crossfire, I would get more RAM. I'm no expert but I think that your current RAM amount wouldn't support multiple monitors and a CrossFireX setup. And yes, that is the part, but I would really recommend buying the GPU from ASUS instead of MSI, as they are very trustworthy and their customer service is top-notch ;)

Unfortunatley, I beleive my board maxes at 24gb. Ive tried 8 gb sticks before, and no POST. Also, the manual says it supports up to 24gb

If it can go all the way to 24GB then that's more than enough. Just get 1 extra 4GB stick or just buy a 3x4GB stick. I'm not actually 100% sure you will need more RAM though. Also at Ultra settings with 4xAA and @1080, you can play BattleField at 35 FPS average with a 2 screen 1920x1080 setup. Of course this RAM upgrade is only needed if you want to do a CrossFireX setup or you want to play on multiple monitors. And those same settings on one 1920x1080 screen would get you about 60 FPS average. So your current setup is cool, its only if you want to CrossFire or use multiple screens is when you might need a RAM upgrade.
Good Luck and I hope I helped ;)

the way the 920's memory controller works, populating all 6 slots probably makes the machine run slower.

Oh you have 24 GBs already? Your OP said that you had 2 sticks of 4GB RAM. Well then whatever! Your build is awesome and good to go. Good luck and make sure your grounded while building.

EDIT: Never mind, didn't see that. Sorry lol. Also remember to choose a best answer, otherwise people will think your still asking this question.

Is that the case with the 970 as well?
