As stated in that elaborate title, the icon just wouldn't go away even though there is no USB drives plugged in. Does this happen to me only or there are others facing this same problem as well?

Are you using a preassembled computer (or laptop)? My Dell Latitude D531 would do that before I switched it over to Linux. Turned out that it was caused by the DVD drive, which can be removed and replaced with other devices.

Yes, it's preassembled. It's a laptop, Asus G55vw. So does that mean the icon will be permanently visible no matter what?

No device is in the list. Nothing. And i thought after upgrading to windows 8.1 it'd go away but it's still there. Guess I just have to live with it.

I had the same problem after I installed Daemon tools..
In devices and printer.. u can remove the virtual drive. This will also remove the iject media icon.

gotta love these posts LOL. always find one a day min.

That doesnt "hide" it.. it replaces it with a freaking arrow which is more gaudy and ugly than having a darn icon in your taskbar. >.<
