Hey all! I finished building my rig last weekend. I haven't built a system since 2006! Obviously times have changed and I'm needing some help. I tried to get the best available withing my budget. So please, do not knock me for whatever I have. Its already together, and I just would like some help FINE TUNING and STRESS TESTING this build. It's not overclocked yet, but will be once all finishing touches have been done. Anyhow, here's my specs:
Cooler Master HAF 922 (Black Interior, USB 3.0 Front)
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Military Class IV
Intel i5 4670K 3.4ghz (stock for now)
EVGA GTX 760 Dual FTW 4Gb w/ACX cooling
EVGA NEX-G 750W PSU
GSkill Ripjaws-X 8GB (2x4gb) DDR3 2133mhz
CM Hyper 212 Evo - Push/Pull w/SickleFlow 120mm
Samsung 840 Evo SATA III 120GB SSD
WD Caviar Blue 1TB 64MB Cache
Asus 24x OD
Logitech G510 Gaming KB
Microsoft Laser Mouse
Asus VE248 LED 24" Monitor
Samsung Syncmaster 920 NW 19" Monitor
Windows 7 HP SP1 64 bit
Besides the actual overclocking, what can I do to make it run at peak performance? I'm talking from the BIOS down to the RAM. Please help, this is beyond my knowledge LOL. I have done some things, but the whole new technology is a bit confusing at times :) Thanks!

Yeah, that's already set. First thing I did actually. Now I'm just having issues here and there with windows media and sound and some other pesky issues I cannot solve. About to just wipe everything and start over again (for the second time). That's why I masking if there's stuff that needs to be done. I shouldn't be having all these issues with a new system, especially when all the hardware is working fine. Maybe it's a bios update? Idk, can't find anything about an update for my board.

According to this, v. 1.5 is the latest BIOS. Is that what you have? http://us.msi.com/product/mb/Z87-G45-GAMING.html#download

Here is a link to MSI BIOS updates and a really good BIOS flashing tool: http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=163900.0
If you follow the link on that page it will take you to a download for a Beta BIOS, in case you are feeling adventurous: http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=169943.0

I have the MSI Z87-G43 MB with an i5 4670K and I have had pretty good luck OC'ing it. Now up to 4.8 GHz and still tweaking. Here is a very good thread with simple, straightforward steps to OC any Haswell board: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1722630/intel-god-quick-dirty-guide-4ghz-haswell.html

Good luck!

Thank you. Looks like it would work, but apparently it doesn't work for windows 64 bit. Go figure huh. Since you got that good of an overclock, what are you using for cooling, and what are your temps?

The only issue i'm really having now is the damn windows media player. I cannot get sound anymore out of it. It's up to date. I get my 5.1 sound out of everything else. Why not media player/center? Whats ever more weird, I went to microsoft's downloads and tried to download it again. It asks to download this genuine thing to verify that the copy of windows is legit. So I did, opened it up, and it says the tool is expired or something. Basically doesn't work. How can I prove it's authentic, even tho it's activated THROUGH THEM! Microsoft is a tru POW!

What are you referring to that "doesn't work for windows 64 bit"? That is what I'm using and it all works fine for me.

My cooling is the Noctura NH D14 SE 2011 with a $10 mounting kit for socket LGA 1150. The SE 2011 is slightly different from the standard NH D14 in that it uses the variable speed PWM fans which cycle up and down as temperatures increase or decrease. Most of the time it is damn near silent as it does its job. The only time that I hear it is when stress testing. A really wonderful piece of equipment! Highly recommended!

My temps range from 28*C. at idle to 43*C. while web surfing and playing YouTube videos to 88*C during Intel Burn Test w/10 passes on high. I can't say enough good words about the Noctura.

If I could put a screenshot up here I could show you. The actual BIOS file. After I extract it, then go to run the application, it says that it doesn't support 64 bit windows. This is what I see after extracting:

7821v1x.txt size 745 packed size 464
AFUDE238.exe size 194 496 packed size 69 660
E7821MS.150 size 8 388 608 packed size 6 139 088

is it the second or third one i double click on? I did the second one and that;'s when the pop up error came about not compatible with 64 bit windows.

Idle temps are good, but you actually like the high 80's?? I really don't like my temps on anything going over 65-70c. Noctura makes really good fans. Ugly in color, but yes, there are silent. I only have the cm hyper 212 evo. Using cooler master sickle flow fans. (push/pull). I did have them hooked up to the motherboard.. but then changed them to the psu. All fans except 2 are hooked to the motherboard. I can hear my fans.. but it's definately not that loud. I run 3x 200mm, 4x 120mm fans total. Only the exhaust and the bottom mounted fans are hooked to the motherboard, and with 5 out of 7 fans going 100%. it's still not loud. :) What kind of overclock do you think I can get with my evo? With my temps being as i stated above.

I'm not to "happy" with temps in the high 80's but that is only during IBT and even then they are only brief spikes. The temp goes up and it takes a couple of seconds for the fan controller and the fans to respond, but once they kick into high, the temps come right down.

Predicting how good a particular CPU and MB are going to OC is damn near impossible. The only way to tell is to give it a try and find out.

Yeah, I agree. Well. Guess i'll find out after all my kinks are worked out. What should I use to stress test all my components? (not going to use prime 95 until I oc) What can I use to test everything there is software for? :)

The new BIOS file is the third one, but you do not double click on it. Move it to a USB flash drive and run the BIOS flash tool on this page, with option 1: http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.msg800577#msg800577

I have no idea what that "AFUDE238.exe" program is. Where did you find it?

Yogi

I'm not aware of any software to "stress test all my components", only those for CPU and Memory, like Intel Burn Test, Memtest86+ Prime95, etc. For the rest of your components you'll just have to pick an application that stresses a particular component. Gaming is a good stress test for the audio and video systems. Firefox with multiple tabs open and a YouTube video playing is a pretty good test. OK?

I got it from your link. But I deleted it all, deleted 7zip. Reinstalled 7zip. Going to try and do it all again. Just out of curiosity, why is there a flashing tool needed? And why is it so risky? I know I have to make sure the power stays on, other than that.. What's so risky?

With the "Flashing Tool" there is almost zero risk because it is a dos based utility. Very safe to use. The only major risk is if there was a power failure.

There are other methods: MSI M-Flash (located in the BIOS) and MSI Live Update. I have used M-Flash several times without any problems, but some have reportedly "bricked" their MB by using M-Flash. Whatever you do DO NOT use Live Update to update your BIOS. It is very risky and the most prone to mess up your board.

Is this the right one?

E7821IMS.154 ===>E7821IMS.150 MP BIOS
VGA BIOS : 2177
GOP : 5.0.1035
ME Version : 9.0.21.1462
RAID ROM : 12.8.0.1016 PV(12.7.0.1936)
LAN OptionRom : 2.1.1.5(UEFI v1.1.0.4)
Device OptionRom : N/A

Sorry, this whole updating and flashing bios is very new to me.. I want to make sure its done right. I have the bios on a thumb drive now.. I just need the tool.. but looks like this is just the bios.. Can you copy and paste here what I need.. the links are helpful.. but not if I do not know what to look for lol. the link that has my board on it.. I click on the link for the tool, and the post for it is dated back in 2007. So I'm lost.

I guess I can try the one in bios first. I was trying it before, but I guess I didn't know what I was doing. Before I even knew what flashing was lol. I stuck a drive in, tried to flash it. Noob mistake, no wonder nothing happened. Nothing was on the drive lol. So basically all I have to do (using the bios way) is have the thumb drive in, select flash bios, select file and let it run?

Yes, if you have the extracted BIOS file on the flash drive. Be sure to select the "Update BIOS + ME". ME= Intel Management Engine.

Oh, trust me, I won't use the live update thing. I read up on that before I even got this board. What's the point of that, and the oc genie if all they do is cause problems lol. I'll go give it a whirl here in a little bit and I'll post back to let ya know the result :)

OK - Good luck!

Flashing went off without a hitch! Thanks! Question tho, should I have lake tiny feature disabled or enable it? What are the key things I need to enable/disable here? I do have an SSD, if that helps.

Yes, Lake Tiny is for SSDs. You want that enabled.

Disable parallel port, unless you have an ancient parallel port printer.

Disable Serial Port (NOT SATA).

Those are the main ones for me.

Congratulations! Now I can refer all BIOS update/flashing questions to YOU!

I'll give those a try then. LOL yeah.. I'm by far the last person to ask about flashing. I noticed a memory performance already. Usage went down 8% so far. Basically my system isn't using as much when not needed. Next step.. (not anytime soon) is to OC! Should I be ok without OC'ing my gpu, and just oc the cpu? Or do I have to OC, cpu, gpu, and ram?

I just remembered something. You DID update the ME during the flash, didn't you? If so, you now can install the latest Intel ME drivers. You should be able to D/L them from MSI website and install them.

OC is whatever you want. CPU or GPU or RAM, in any order. Don't expect much from a RAM OC though.

Thanks for the "Best Answer".
