Hi all,
I am facing the need to rename a computer/user account as mentioned in the title and searching through net I can't say that I found a straight answer of how to do it! The scheme of the local network is simple: There's a windows 2008 server-box with Active Directory, that plays the role of Domain Controller, and a few windows 7 pro-members of that AD. My need is to rename both the computer name of a member and the user account that logs on from that computer. I want to rename and not to create a new user account so as to keep all data files and configurations of the previous user(or else the previous user's profile). I found these set of commands "netdom renamecomputer currentcompname /newname:newcompname /usero: domain\adminname /passwordo:* /userd: domain\adminname /passwordd:* /force /reboot:10", where it is mentioned that it changes both computer name and domain account but I don't know if that will keep the user profile intact. Another method is if I first rename the domain account in the active directory users and computers menu and then delete the computer from the domain, rename it as needed and then rejoin using the renamed account. What is your opinion on that two scenarios? Thank you in advance!!

Solution
Well if sign in as domain administrator on the user computers(windows 7 pro workstations) you will be able to right click my computer and on the left click adavanced system settings on computer name tab click change then change PC name(you don't have to take it off the domain to change computer names) as for changeing domain name you have to go into active directory users and computers click users find the name of the person you want to change right click properties, then goto account and under user logon name change it. hope this helps

The user account has nothing to do with the computer account, you can burn the PC and the user's domain account will be the same. IF you are talking about the domain account. If it's a local account, just renaming the computer or even removing it from the domain won't do anything.

For computer name I got it. I can change it using one way or another. So my question then is, data that a domain member user has locally stored on his pc i.e. word/excel docs located in My documents folder etc, will be accessible to him after his domain account is renamed and he logs in with the new credentials? I have my doubts about that case!

Eventually, I renamed the user account through server's administrative tools. Then renamed the client PC and all data files and info stayed there! It worked out with no problem. One little thing though! On the client pc the local user kept the previous account name(i mean in the c:\users\). Not nice :(

That's weird it should of just created another folder with the new name( i know it wouldn't replace that folder just create another folder with the new logon name) At work i'm a domain administrator and when i log on to a users computer via my own account it creates a folder for my logon account.

Yeah, I don't know but that's what I got! Is there a way to fix that?
