I have been having difficulty with games running at extremely low Frames per second, particularly in combat or when lots is going on (e.g city areas in warcraft). According to the required specs for all my games, i have more than enough. my specs are:

Pentium Dual Core E5300 @ 2.6GHz
4.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650

I can get framerates as low as 1-2 per second at some points in game, even if i put the graphics down to lowest on everything. Games generally run fine when not in combat, but suffer dramatically whenever a lot is going on.

Could this be a problem with my Hard disk or CPU? the computer is about 3 years old, and has been used a lot. The GPU is about 1 year old.

Make sure your gpu drivers are up to date, and anti-aliasing is turned off. The gtx 650 should run it no problem. Now if you did that and you;re still getting low framerate its because you have a old lga775 cpu, and it would be time for a upgrade.

I would guess it's that old CPU. Run MSI afterburner and task manager>performance to see cpu and gpu usage during game. I bet one or both of your cpu cores is maxed out and your gpu isn't.

My cpu is almost always at 100% when playing games, so my guess is that is the problem. With regard to replacing CPUs, can i just buy one and install it in any motherboard. Im not experienced with upgrading

you would need to purchase a new motherboard and cpu, and possibly ram, give me a budget and we can see what we can build you.

im on budget of about £100 or there abouts. if it would be possible to use my old ram im guessing that would save money.

Your cpu is bottlenecking your system man..... Also if your gonna re-use your ram we're gonna need to know more about the sticks :)

That's DDR2. I would definitely recommend saving up until you can afford a new motherboard/cpu/ram.

E100 (After rebate) - Not the greatest setup in the world but it fits your budget and comes with the correct ram - You decide.. or you could save up a little more and get a decent Mobo + an excellent Processor for around.. ohhh idk E150 (Won't come with ram though)

how much better would a quad core be than a dual core? is number of cores more imporant or the ghz?

quad core is better at multithreaded tasks as well as programs that utilize it. as for the number of cores and the ghz they both are important. If you're compairing the ones i picked out, the amd will out perform the intel build, i was just giving you options lol

Intel always has lower clock speeds than AMD when comparing price... It doesn't necessarily mean that the Intel CPU is slower by any means (In fact they are usually faster!) - You have to remember that they are both different companies that make their Processors differently - Don't get me wrong I love AMD (hell its what I'm using currently).. Intel is generally more efficient if you were to compare the same # of cores and Frequencies.

Also games are getting better and better at multi-threading - No you don't need an 8 core beast to run your game smoothly.. However you will definitely benefit from a quad core
