How to set an external drive as download location

I have a desktop computer and laptop that my grandson plays video games on. I was told I could download and run the games from an external hard drive to save space and memory. Is this possible? I know the hard drive would have to be connected in order to play the games.
I am running Windows 7 on them.

When you install the game, you can select the drive as the install location.

Games take hard drive space, but NOT memory when they are not running.

If they use Steam, they can set a library on the external as well(just remember to plug it in before starting Steam.).

Some files will always still end up on the hard drive(appdata).

For actual Download locations, you can either:

1. Set the default download location to somewhere on the external. How depends on the specific browser, but it is in the Internet Settings somewhere
or
2. Set it to ask every time. Again, save to somewhere on the external

For installing games:
Almost every simnle application or game gives the option to install where you want. Choose a location on the external.

For Steam games:
Steam-Settings-Steam Library Folders
Create and choose a location on the external

I have had quite a few that say click to install, then it installs without ever asking where or giving me a choice. Usually it does ask if I want a desktop shortcut. I will search my browser settings to see if I can find where it asks for the default download folder.

I'll come back and let you know if I find it. Thank you so very much.

Almost every applications will say:
Default, or Custom or Advanced.

Accept the Default, and it will almost always go to the C drive. Custom or Advanced will generally give you the option of where to install it.

The desktop shortcut is tiny, and can live on the desktop. Where the actual application/game is installed is the key issue.

You just have to pay attention during the install, and read what the dialog boxes actually say.

Wow! thank you. I was a documentation specialist and know only a little about computers. Just enough to get by. I work 2 jobs, live wOlder parents taking care of house/yard and inherited 3 grandchildren (boy 10 yrs, girl 5 yrs and 18 months) Just trying to keep my computer/laptops alive with these 3 are a real challenge. So any help in this area is so welcomed!
