Ok, I just built a new computer for the first time and I am trying to get ubuntu 12.04 to install from a usb drive. When installing an error message comes up saying its unable to install grub. I can't get it to connect to the internet and I know that ubuntu needs internet acces to successfully install all of the drivers and such. I'm assuming I can't access the internet bc my motherboards drivers havnt been installed yet. But the problem is I can't install the drivers from the installation disk when I'm live on ubuntu. My motherboard is an MSI Z87-G45. PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok, you'll need to download the appropriate BIOS for your MB on another computer, and update your BIOS. You should be able to boot to the BIOS screen with no OS installed.

Once you've completed that, try the Ubuntu install again. Also, make sure that the Ubuntu flash drive is working properly on another PC.

If you need to wipe the flash drive and reinstall Ubuntu on it, you can download the image from canonical and use the pen drive Linux installer to create the boot drive.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: If you're new to Linux try the 12.04 LTS first, and then update to 13.10 or 14.04 when you're more familiar. The LTS releases focus more on stability, which is useful for beginners. If you're not a novice with Linux, then the 13.04...

If you're not a novice with Linux, then the 13.04 version may be something you want to try. Some of the drivers are a bit newer, and there were some minor changes from 12.04.

What BIOS update trick are you using? I have never heard of it! What good does a BIOS file do on another system ??

Grub is the last thing to install so I should think your system is fine with Ubuntu. In fact, your hardware and drivers are already configured by then. If you need proprietary drivers for a piece of hardware later it'll let you know.

I would suspect that your installer got corrupted and you probably should try to reinstall your image onto the Flash before you dig too deep.

Your internet is probably not working because you have a modem that requires a proprietary driver, that can be fixed on your live USB. What modem are you using?

nss000 He would need to download the BIOS to another computer because his internet is not working.
