I just bought a Brother MFC-J5910DW. It arrived by FedEx and was damaged. Because the shipper FORGOT to pay $2 for shipping insurance FedEx will not cover it. Brother will not honor warranty and Costco will not exchange it. I took it to Brother's repair and they said $524 to fix it!!! So I have a printer that starts up and keeps pushing the scanner back to top for several moments then give me a "Failure to INIT AF" error. It seldom prints anything.
My question is, is there software that would allow me to reprogram this? Is there a way to convert this to just a wifi printer and dump the whole scanner parts? Is there a way to bypass the scanner check? Basically is there anyway to recover some usefulness from this HUGE wasted money?

This would appear to fall back on the shipper. And if you bought it from Costco, them as well.

It arrived. Broken. Send it back.
Complain to CostCo HQ if necessary.

Thank you. I already tried that route. My question here is for a method to reprogram the machine, access programming functions in the machine so that I can remove the scanner from the whole OS system.

I get what you're saying, but there is no way I'd accept a prebroken, brand new item.

And any software workaround may invalidate the warranty on the rest of it.

It would be easier to go to work and make the money again than to reprogram the thing. I don't think this has ever been done with any printer.
