How can I tell if my motherboard is dead?

New PC build, ASUS B85M-E motherboad, i7-4470K CPU, PurePower BQTL7 PSU, Intel SSD,
32Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600

When I try to switch it on it cuts out immediately. Same problem with another PSU I have so I'm pretty sure it's not that. Same problem with the memory out, so doesn't look to be that.

Motherboard dead? Or are there other things I can try?

Many Thanks.

John

make sure the 8 pin atx power plug or the four pin on the edge of the mb is connected. check that the mb or cpu cooler not shorting out on the mb tray. make sure you used the mb standoffs. check that the io sheild not shorting the mb out. try powering the mb with just the onboard video and one dim. if it posts try updating the mb bios.

Do you mean the 20+4? Those seem to be seated firmly. The PSU doesn't have a cable specifically marked ATX so I've used a CPU one for the ATX12V connector - I assume that's OK.

Forgot to mention the cooler is my soec - CM Seidon 102M. Visually, everything seems clean, however I don't have a meter to test anything,

Used.

What's the io shield?

I've taken the mb out stripped down to just one ram stick and tried starting by shorting the power pins , but I get the same result (although the fan start is much weaker).

Dead board?
