Memory burned during cpu fan install?

Thank you for reading this first and foremost. I am helping a friend fix his computer after he had thermal related shutdowns with cpu heat exceeding 70 deg cel. He then bought a new Cooler Master cpu cooler to bring down those excessive temps. I have been helping with the install and screwed up with the thermal paste. Heaven forbid but I made the foolhardy mistake of dripping some into the cpu pins without noticing. Unsurprisingly it would not POST when it was all put together again.

Going back over I wiped up the thermal paste on the chip with 97% alcohol and then much to my surprise it went into a four beep "ram read/write" error. After fiddling with that it seems I have two dead ram sticks and [once removed] the computer boots just fine missing DIMM 1-2. Should I presume that the two errors were related and that the overvoltage or pin jump burned the ram? Or should I fear that the ram sticks could burn out again if I replaced them due to ongoing error? Any advice on recovery from this blunder? Thanks again.

I might have a computer around here that accepts 1333 Mhz, offhand, I believe my main rig does. The computer in question for the repair job is a Dell XPS 8300. Stock Mobo and Cpu, It's an "Intel 2nd Gen Core i7 2 i7-2600 / 3.4 GHz" if I recall correctly. Should I try the "dead" sticks in my main rig to differentiate if it is a bad channel or ram stick? Seems sensible?
