I would like to know if it's possible to install and run a SAS drive and a SATA drive, each as separate virtual drives, in a PowerEdge 1950 with a 5i controller?

More about : mix sas dive sata drive poweredge 1950

Yes they can run on the same controller. Not sure if they can run together in a raid though. If they are seperate drives then yea nothing to worry about at all.

Remember - SAS won't work on SATA but SATA will work on SAS. Don't give into those SAS to SATA adapers. They don't work very well.

Also its only SATA II so you wont benifit from tossing Sata III drives in there. I actually run a Dell Perc 5S card in my dektop. I got a Raid 0 of 2 2TB drives. Also the Max hard drive size that will work is 2TB. Now if you put in a 4TB it will read the drive but only up to 2TB. What the size of the vitural drive is doesn't matter is the size of the drive it self. Runs pretty good i might say. Get like 260 MBps on this sucker. even though its only Sata II wouldn't mind seeing the performance of a Raid 0 of some SSD's.
