I tried using guides, but they just leave me in doubt and I want opinions and advice from an expert community.

PC specs: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c03332085&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=5154893

Will the PSU be able to run this system with a Radeon HD 7870? What about a Hd 7970? I don't plan on using crossfire because I'm on a single monitor at 1080p. The extra card would just be a waste to me. Newegg PSU calculator says I need around 500w.

You should be fine to get a 7870 with your 600W power supply but you might be pushing it with a 7950. I say either get the 7870 or wait until the R7/R9 series of AMD GPU's comes out.
