Hey guys, first time posting here :)

My XFX 7950 DD has been hitting temperatures of around 75-80°C in gaming (sometimes more - SR4 for example) and temps touching 90°C on Furmark before I switched it off.

The fans never seem to go much past 40%, but if I set them to 60% in MSI Afterburner it reduces the temperatures to around 60-65°C.

It idles at anywhere between 30-40°C.

I've tried it in both PCI-E slots as I thought my WiFi card could be blocking airflow somewhat, but it hasn't made much of a difference (if any at all).

Is this normal for this card? I've heard people say the DD cooler isn't very good but I'm wondering if I should return it? The card is only a few weeks old.

The core clock is at 925MHz according to MSI Afterburner.

Thanks for your help.

Solution

Not really, you have the highest clocked 7950 from them I have the 900MHz version and it goes into high 70's but I never hear the fan ramp up which I appreciate. If you check reviews of the HD7950 then you will see similar temps http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7950/30.html
Most all...
Those temps are actually well within the operating range for the card. Furmark tortures the card and many reviewers stopped using it because it is unrealistic. That the fan is at 40% means it has not reached the temp threshold to ramp up set by manufacturer. They simply choose quiet with their limit rather than loud and cool.

60-65c are normal temps, so are the 30-40c on idle. Try setting the fan on auto at MSI Afterburner and check how it goes. If you already tried that and it just sit at 40% then leave it manually at 60-65%, its no harm.

When it's auto I get the temps of 75-80°C and it won't go much higher than 40%. It's when I ramp it up to 60% manually that I get around 60-65°C

So there's nothing really to worry about? Sorry if I seem a bit thick, I'm still fairly new to all this :S

Most all current GPU's have a max temp of 95-105°C depending on generation.

Solution
It's not the best cooler ever built, I know, I have one, although mine is at the reference 800/1250 clocks.
It's quite sensitive to airflow, make sure the case has good, strong intake fan/s in the front (and side if the case allows). Tidy up the internal wiring to keep it out of the airflow, it's surprising how badly just a few wires can restrict it.
The card idles at high temperatures because the fans barely turn, it's not a problem at all, just how the card runs.
An 80C load temperature is hot but acceptable, but you'll do nothing but good by increasing the fan speeds and lowering the temperatures by setting a more aggressive fan profile in Afterburner.
