So I've always run audio and video via hdmi on my radeon. From a performance standpoint, should I use the gpu's dvi + audio from my motherboard integrated card? I'm just playing in stereo right now on a 1080p tv.

Solution
doesnt matter, all the sound processing in onboard audio chipsets is offloaded to the cpu through software emulation, same for the gpu's audio. The sound chip is just an interface between the software and hardware. Even many high end discrete sound cards dont have hardware processing, like the Asus xonar range, its all in the software. The higher end hardware is more for higher quality DAC's, op-amps, pre-amps, etc.

Not really. If you run the sound by connecting the S/PDIF connector to the card, its the sound chip that's processing all the audio. Also, its your TV that will be decoding the sound, since the S/PDIF and HDMI carry digital signals.
