Hello guys,

I'm planning on building a i7-4820K based CPU for gaming with the following specs:

CPU: i7-4820K

M/B: Asus Z87-Plus

GPU: MSI GTX 760

I don't really want to play the most demanding games at the moment and if I feel like doing so, I'm thinking on buying another GTX 760 for SLI.

My question are:

a) Is the motherboard right for the current specs and will support the GPU SLI later on?
b) What power supply would I need for that?
c) Should I just but a GTX 770M Instead of the SLI plan?
d) Are 8 GB of RAM enough? Which brand should I get?
e) Is there any recommendation you could give me?

Any reply will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much for your time!

Andrew.

The GTX 770 isn't really that big of an upgrade over the HD 7970 GHZ.
You gain 5% performance, lose AMD's Never Settle Gold bundle, and get Batman.
Sounds OK when you don't take price into account.
When you do take into account the 100$ more you're spending, going for the GTX 770 seems silly.
(Note that many GTX 770's are already overclocked so the performance advantage will be bigger. HD 7970's however have a lot more performance to gain through overclocking)

If games keep getting optimisations for 8 core CPU's you should instead put your money towards a Core i7.

It makes no sense to invest in a X79 platform in order to sacrifice graphics performance.
The only reason why you'd want to get a Core i7 4820K instead of a 4770K would be gaming with 3 or more high-end graphics cards (GTX 780, Titan).
You will be much better off with a Core i7 4770K.
Or, if the PC is purely for gaming, you can even step down to a Core i5 4670K.
There aren't a lot of games that take advantage of hyperthreading.

Here's what I recommend.

By the way you can't use a GTX 770M because it is a graphics card made for notebooks.
The GTX 770 and HD 7970 GHZ edition trade blows, but on avarage the GTX 770 comes out slightly ahead.
The difference is less than 5% so I don't think going with the GTX 770 makes sense.
The 100$ savings and free games that come with the AMD are too hard to pass up.

As for the RAM, yes. 8GB's of RAM is plenty.
You'll need a quality 750W power supply to run these two cards.
I recommend going a bit higher if you're going to overclock.

Mobo isn't compatible, that cpu needs the more expensive x79 platform. That being said, unless u are going with three very high end gpu's you are better off with a 4670k (maybe 4770k) and a ~$150 z87 mobo.

500w psu for 1 gpu, 750w for 2.

"M" gpu's are for laptops.

8gb is enough. Should be 2x4gb sticks. 1600mhz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5v.

Wow thanks a lot guys. It's the first time I'm buying a desktop PC so I don't know how to do it (Sorry for the "M" fail lol).

So, with everything said, I'll take a i7-4770K + Z87 mobo instead and 8 GB RAM. My problem is the graphic card now. GTX 770 or HD 7970?

I want to play at 1080p and I'm really wondering if those extra $100 are worth the improvement.

Thanks again!

I'd go with a Haswell build and save money and get better performance, if you do go with a 4820K get a good mobo, most builders won't touch BioStar, look to Asus, the Rock or GigaByte..........and if looking for liquid cooling you'll need a H80 minimum to top a $35 Hyper 212 EVO on the X79
