I have an Intel workstation that I purchased 5 years ago, and its working fine.
It's a S5000XVN mother board, with a single Xeon 5345 2.33 ghz processor and 8GB ECC ram.
I would like to know if its better to add one more Xeon 5345(since the motherboard supports two processors) or to change the processor to Xeon 5345. I have access to both (used condition) and need to know which to go for.

Solution
No have to be matching CPUs saying two E5345 would be better than a singel E5450. Wht i was saying since you have access to both u can put in dual 5345 and benchmark it see how it does and then put in the single 5450 and see how it does. Pretty sure the dual 5345 will be better though. Bu t also depends on what you doing. Like if its cad and video and have multi core enabled yes that option would be better. But if you stick w single cpu the 5450 is quite more powerful than a 5345
I would say toss in the extra E5345. Having 8 Cores and a total of 16 megs of Cashe at 2.33 is better than 4 cores and 10 megs at 3.0, but since you have access to it all it doesn't hurt to put them both in, Bench it, then toss in the single E5450 and bench that.

Thanks for the reply drtweak,
Just to confirm, you are saying, I can run my current E5345(2.33 ghz) along with the E5450(3.0 ghz) and it would work. I didn't know that was possible, but if it is, would be my best option.

Thank you for clarifying.
I have been offered two E5340 (2.4 ghz, Intel confidential) processors, unused ones for about 50$. I'm thinking of going for it. I can keep my E5435 as a spare or sell it off.

The E5450 (used one) would cost me about 100$.
