Hi there,
I'm currently in the process of building a gaming computer and was pretty sure that the i5 4670k would be fine as games only really use quad core up to this point. I was a little unsettled to learn that watch dogs which is the game I'm half building this computer for recommends an octa core cpu to max it. WIll the I5 be alright or should I go for the i7 or even an amd 8 core. Are the AMDs the same as intel in that they are a 4 core with HT to make 8? Money is an issue and I'd really prefer not to have to throw another hundred dollars on the cpu unless it is completely necessary.
Thanks for any help you are able to privide

You don't NEED a core i7.
There aren't a lot of games out there that benefit from hyper threading.
The games that benefit from more than four cores however are increasing in number.

Here's how today's CPU's stack up in BF4 Beta.
Note that gamegpu screwed up the clock speeds on the FX 9390 and 9570.

All of the CPU's you mentioned will do just fine.
If you want to save some money, you might as well buy a FX 8320 and overclock.
Or, you can also buy a Xeon E3 1230 V3 and a cheap motherboard.
It's basicly a Core i7 4770 that runs...

It's basicly a Core i7 4770 that runs at slightly lower clocked speeds.

The reason why I linked battlefield benchmarks is because In my opinion, Watch Dogs will be just as well optimised.

And no, AMD CPU's do not use hyper threading or anything like that.
An AMD FX 8 core uses 4 modules.
Every module contains 2 "cores".
These are not full cores because they share resources.
And that leads to lower performance per core but also lower manufacturing costs.

Thanks Kamen,
Up till now I shared a similar view to yours that there are no games that need more than 4 cores but watch dogs released their system specs and for ultra an 8 core cpu was recommended? Thanks for the BF chart and the info about the amd CPUs, if you think a 4670k will suffice then I'll stick with that.
