Hi all, I'm having some issues on a new build which is driving me crazy!

So basically I have a Asus P9X79 PRO mobo, an intel 4820K cpu, GTX 780, 4x4GB Gskill ripjaw DDR3 RAM. When I attempt to boot the pc all I get is a red CPU LED nd nothing else happens (fans etc which are plugged in spin up and run fine, no led for RAM or GPU).

I have tried to flash to the latest BIOS as I have a feeling this is why the CPU has issues... When I try this with a .cab file the USB flash light blinks briefly but then stays solid. I then tried the .rom to .cab converter which seemed to work (blinked etc for a few mins) however I can still not post. I then tried to flash the latest BIOS again (.cab) but i just get the short flash and then solid light. I have read that when you turn on the PC it should install the BIOS however, since I cant post this obviously doesn't happen...any ideas anyone?

BTW I have checked wiring, run it outside on cardboard with minimum components (incl just one ram stick) and nothing seems to work....

Help would be greatly appreciated!!

ATM im half tempted to just get a diff mobo but if i need to flash them all to get them to work I dont like the sound of that unless there are some mobos which will work straight out the box with the newer 4820k??!!

Thanks!!!!

This is Your problem:

Mobo:
Intel® Socket 2011 for 2nd Generation Core™ i7 Processors

CPU:
4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processors I7-4820K (3.70 GHz)

So in other words your mobo does NOT support your CPU for been 2 generations ahead..

New mobo is needed - Dont forget to check compatibility !

If you need any help just say so

Charmer, thanks for your reply. Its been a while since I built a pc and just assumed that since its a socket 2011 it would work! Which alternative motherboards would you suggest? What do i need to look out for?

Thanks

Hi COL, I have tried updating the BIOS but it does not seem to accept the .cap versions. I did the converter flash, but since I cant post, it cant complete the bios update so I cant flash the latest bios.....

Rest the BIOS to default with either the button on the mobo (I think that model has one) or by using the jumper or battery pull method.

Then, disconnect/remove any extra devices (SSD, HDD, sound card, etc), leaving only the minimal hardware (CPU, GPU, memory). Be sure the BIOS update is on a USB drive. Try again (to upgrade).

Do you know what BIOS version is installed? You may have to find a previous CPU revision to complete the process or return the mobo otherwise.

The mobo has the bios on it which it came with (which is still a .ROM). I have successfuly flashed the .rom to .cap converter, however in the instructions it says it then needs to boot to complete the install of the bios and only ten will it accept the .cap bios versions. Sadly i cant get it to boot since im using the 4820 cpu so I cant install the newest bios.

I have now ordered a bios chip which will have the latest bios version, so should support the 4820 cpu. I hope that works!!

I found a seller on ebay were they provide a chip flashed to a chosen bios. It is also possible to get them direct from asus but since its in America its likely to take a while shipping wise.

Sadly ive had the motherboard for over a year, but I never got round to building it so sadly im pretty sure its out of warranty. I agree with trusting such sources, but right now it doesn't do anything, so it cant really get any worse! I have seen on other forums people who have used the same seller and have had success so hopefully it will work!

Well... Ihave P9X79 mobo and i7-4930K cpu
CPU led is burning bright red!
in Asus support it says that this mobo supports the cpu (https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P9X79/#support)
But I dunno what is the bios version in my mobo???

Check a barcode sticker on the motherboard. The last 4 digits on that sticker stand for the board's BIOS version.
