How is this for hardware and support. I bought a Verbatin 650gb about 5 years ago (Plug 'n play) to be used as a picture backup for my family pictures. We plug it in (when we remember) about every 6 months or so. Guess what. Plugged it in a nothing. No spinning, no beeping, no whining. DEAD. So I talk to tech support at Verbatim and they said.. "Oh well".. "Tough Luck".. Is there any hardware provider out there that you can trust that has a positive attitude and stands by their product. And I promise, it has not been dropped, it is stored in its box, in a drawer, surrounded by my socks.. Verbatim. Very disappointed. Don't support them if you don't have too! YHBW (You have been warned).

How long was the warranty? 3 years? It is now long out of warranty.

Drives die. What did you expect them to do?

Is this an external drive? Maybe the power supply or the interior circuitry is dead, rather than the actual drive.
Take it out of the case and connect it internally, or with a USB dock or cable.

there are a few, though most companies won't stand behind something 6 years old, there are a few who may try to help you out somehow.

If you don't mind navigating horrendous customer support, eventually ASUS will in the end stand behind its stuff (their customer support/tech staff however is epic poor, and i'm not sure what they'd do for something 6 years old... probably tell you to junk it, that said they do have a very long support cycle for their stuff, so it's not outside the realm of possibility for them to eventually help you out).

Western Digital always seems attentive and caring whenever i call them, they have solid tech help, though i'm not sure they would do much in your situation...

Corsair's customer service and support is fantastic, one of the few companies out there that has both an excellent technical support staff and an excellent warranty policy. Some of their products they will support for "life". The only company i know of in the tech industry who will.

I've had some good experiences with MSI's customer service staff... that said i wouldn't suggest you take that as an endorsement of their quality, unlike the previous companies i've listed, MSI does tend to produce a lot of junk (especially motherboards).

Funny you should mention taken it out of the case. I did just that, put it into a SATA internal connection nothing, tried other sata casings, nothing. It is just a shame that you would put such information on a drive hardly used and loose it. I have other drive which work like like stallions all the time (not verbatim thank goodness), past their warranty. Guess I'll have bring out the Data Recovery tools and get to work on it. Thanks for the support guys, And ingtar23 I like your listing. Sounds like The extra buck is the way to go..

Unfortunately, hard drives eventually dies. I generally try to replace hard drives after about 5 years of use even when it works perfectly fine. For me that means I need to replace 3 or 4 hard drives next year. I think the longest I have used a hard drives was 9 years; I was an old 60GB IBM Deskstar hard drive.

I thought that I had a problem with my 1 TB Seagate HDD and I contacted Seagate Tech Support. I found their support technicians to be very knowledgeable and most helpful. They even sent a replacement drive although it turned out that I did not need it. Based on this experience, I'm a big Seagate fan!
