Are PSUs usually repaired or replaced?

I've got a Rosewill PSU, and recently it's been making grinding noises when under load. I already submitted an RMA request to Rosewill, and about to package and ship the item. They told me that they would be replacing the item rather than repairing it, which to me was a bit surprising (in a good way), because of course I'd prefer a replacement rather than a repair.

However, is this the norm? Do companies usually not even bother repairing PSUs because of how dangerous it can be to open one up? I assume that Rosewill will test my busted PSU first though, at least, before replacing it? Will my replacement PSU most likely be a refurbished model rather than a new one?

What model Rosewill is it?

The Capstone , Lightning , and Tachyon series are the only good PSU's they make.

If it's not one of these 3 series , I would replace it.

it's a better experience for them to replace and then re-furb the unit you provided. It's not that dangerous if you know what you are doing, which they will do.

Replacing it gets you out of their service queue faster. Better for the customer, better for them. Rather than tracking that particular part all the way through the repair process and all the way back to you, it's cheaper/faster for them to just give you a new one off the shelf.

Your old item goes into their repair pile, to be fixed if possible and sold as refurb....whenever.

PSUs are always replaced from these kind of companies repairing a psu requires someone to trace the problem and repair it which costs more than it being manufactured and time.there is always danger while handling electricity.but there are companies that refurbish products .but most likely they end up being recycled (psu).the company will preform a simple test just to verify defect in the product.

This is the exact PSU model. Okay, I can understand that Rosewill will send me a replacement, partly to keep the customer happy, and then when they have time, possibly repair the model I sent in so they can re-use it.

That Rosewill is a decent unit.

I would never buy a refurb PSU.

I rarely buy a refurb anything, but when I mentioned refurb, I was asking whether Rosewill will send me a refurb PSU when I send in my dying one.

I've only received new items on my returns in the past.

Seasonic repairs the PSU and sends it back to you. They have the facilities to do repairs because they actually manufacture the PSUs.

Companies that don't actually manufacture the PSU them-self will swap out the defective unit for a new unit or possibly even a refurb unit.

I know PC Power and Cooling repairs and sends back your original unit since I've had to RMA a PSU (OEM was Seasonic) to them.

Corsair, I know, will replace with a new PSU.

Okay thanks. Generally speaking from what I hear, Newegg/Rosewill (same company?) are known for their good support. There have been some bad stories, but they seem to be overall pretty good.
