I render 3DS max on a Q6600 with a GTX 260. Its not a matter of if you can. Yes you can render just about anything out on any PC regardless of hardware. Its just a matter of how long.

Exactly. What software are you using?

3DS Max 2011 and 2012. Also have Maya, After Effects, and Premier but my buddy does all the video editing. I just do the 3DS max stuff. Since i upgraded to a Q6600 its renders out in half the time now. But still takes me 2 hours to do a 600 frame 1080p on my 3DS Max. My buddy uses a Mac though with a i7 3770, 32 gigs of ram, SSD, and 780m video card and we use Raw video and render to 1080 and still takes a while for a few minutes of video.

I don't have any software yet but a few months down the line I may need to do some rendering so I just wanted to make sure this build could do it before I got it, so if I get some software I'll probably be getting cyberlink power director

Here is the system specs page for PowerDirector:

You should be fine with your setup, it will be well utilized by the program. If you can afford a better CPU that would always make things run faster.
