Upgrading my Dell XPS 8300

I bought the Dell a few years back and plugged in a custom video card (ATI 5850) into it. It has a i7 2600 and 8 GB of RAM in it. The components I am planning on upgrading this too are:

- Adding a SSD (500-512 GB)

The main reason I am going for overkill with the RAM is because I do use photoshop and also plan on using this machine for running VM's.

Two questions for you guys:

1. Are there any alternatives to the upgrades you would suggest?
2. I am in no immediate hurry. Do you guys think it is worth waiting for any possibly Black Friday sales?

I am on a budget of around $1000 (these parts put me at $1083 but I have convinced the wife of it already).

Thanks. Is that memory better than the one I had selected and supported on the XPS 8300? It is around the same price as what I selected so does not matter that way. Or will the Motherboard just adjust it to a lower speed in case 1600 is not supported?

Also, thanks @drtweak, I do have Windows 7 Ultimate. So that part is taken care of.

yes if the motherboard can't run at that speed it will just bump it down. Also as far as i know (At least on optiplexs. My IT company is a dell certifed reseller) they only take 1.5V ram or lower. If its 1.65 it may bump the speed down (Had a 1600 1.65 when the desktop took 1600 but bumped it to 1333 because it didn't have enough voltage) but both SR-71 and your's are 1.5 and will work just fine.
