Issue with random restarting

Hey guys,

The other day I started having an issue where my computer would randomly restart itself. This usually took several hours before it actually restarted itself. It starts with my mouse cursor lagging a tad before the system locks up and restarts. I get the error message saying it didn't shut down properly but I can continue and get back to my desktop. I then get an error message saying that I had a bluescreen error, even though I never see a blue screen. I can't get a screenshot of it as I don't really want to switch my computer on after the last crash.

The last one was different from the others. The cursor lagged again and wasn't being as responsive as usual during the whole time I was on it. The screen then started flashing different colours, but mostly pink. Something inside my computer started whirring really loudly so I quickly did a forced shutdown.

I was thinking it may be a failing power supply? Before it randomly restarts, I could play graphically intense games without any errors so I didn't think it could be my graphics card. But now I'm unsure, but my guess is either PSU or the GPU. After the noise it made, I'm a little too worried to switch it on again. It's also worth noting that I used this as an excuse to do a fresh install of Windows 7. I've also done a memory test and no errors came up.

Any opinions or help would be greatly appreciated,

Steve

Edit: I realise there are a lot of topics like this and I looked through them but I felt the need to post a topic with my exact symptoms. Money and options are tight so I can't afford to take the plunge for a new part without being sure it's what is broken. Sorry you have to see this topic again!

Doh! Computer specs! Of course!
This will be from memory.

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
GPU: Palit (Forget the model) 768MB GDDR5
PSU: Antec 500w (I think that's right)
HDD: 1TB Samsung Spinpoint something-or-other
RAM: Corsair XMS3 DDR3 8GB
OS: Windows 7 64bit

System is 3 years old.

New update.

I tried removing my graphics card today and removed some dust from my CPU while I was at it. I then booted up my computer to see if anything would change. On boot up, I had a CPU over-temperate warning but once the computer was fully booted, I checked the temperatures and they were fairly normal. About 5 - 10 minutes after boot up, I got a blue screen. There was no lock-up this time, no whirring noises, no mouse lag but I DID see the blue screen this time.

Now I'm really stumped. Any ideas? I have no idea if it's my GPU, CPU, PSU, my motherboard or even a combination of a few. If I had the money, I'd use this chance to just buy a whole new system but that isn't an option at the moment.

Thanks guys.
