Here are the specs then ill explain the issue at hand.
Radeon 7870 OC edition
AMD FX 4100
Motherboard: Gigabyte M68MT-23 (socket m2)
PSU 700w

i would like to overclock the 4100 but my motherboard prevents it. When i overclock it, it refuses to go over 3.9 ghz and when it does sometimes it boots but others it fails to im just wondering if its a power problem with my mobo because i intend on getting a 6100 from a friend so do you think it could support the 6100 or will it possibly fry some things out?

thanks - jacob

Solution
It's your motherboard. Lower end boards don't offer the same ammount of features as a more high end one. If you want to overclock invest in a new motherboard with a 970 chipset (990FX if you can afford it) and an aftermarket CPU fan.
