Hello Toms!

So here's my situation. I currently have a desktop with a 250gb Mushkin Chronos SSD with OS and some other apps installed on it and a 1tb Caviar blue for storage. I recently purchased an ultrabook and wish to put my Chronos in it and buy a new SSD for my desktop. Unfortunately I cannot afford to purchase a new SSD and the moment and I have a plan that I want to get some input on:

1) I will partition the HDD and put storage on one partition and format the other.
2) I will backup my ultrabook's HDD to the storage partition on my Caviar Blue.
3) I will clone the SSD onto the formatted partition of the Caviar Blue.
4) I will format the SSD.
5) I will clone the laptop HDD to the newly formatted SSD.
6) In the near future, I will purchase a new SSD for my desktop. I will clone the current OS from the Caviar Blue back to the new SSD, and then will wipe the OS partition of the HDD. I will then combine the partitions and be left with my full 1tb of storage.

Is this logical if at all possible? Which cloning software would you all recommend?

I figured as much. The safest way I can see doing this would be to:

1) Clone current SSD to new SSD, format current SSD.
2) Clone ultrabook HDD to current formatted SSD, install.

Is there an issue with cloning from flash to disk storage? Or disk to flash? I remember reading somewhere that one of the two had issues.

Last week, I installed a 128 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD into my system. I used the Samsung "Data Migration" tool to clone my C: drive from my 1 TB HDD to the SSD. It worked really well. It even copied the system reserved partition to the SSD.

I can't comment on cloning from SSD to HDD but it couldn't be too hard, I would think.

I almost always recommend a clean install on a new SSD. But if you really want to do it...migration should work in either direction.

What if I were to clone my current SSD to a new, smaller SSD, and then do a clean install on the old SSD for my laptop? The issue is that I want an SSD for both systems but I want the larger in my laptop, but do not want to purchase a second larger SSD.

If the data consumed is smaller than 90% the size of the new smaller SSD, yes, that will work.
