would a 500w run on my optiplex 740

hello im asking if a 500w power supply would work on my optiplex 740 because i want too get a better graphics card to run

This phrase relates to the fact that power supply units (PSU) only have to pull as much wattage as your components (CPU, GPU, RAM, ect.) use for your system as a whole. This means if you have a 500 watt power supply, and your system only pulls 270 watts, then you will only use about 280 watts total (usually somewhere close to what your system uses).
