Here it is, really old computer that needs upgrading. Here are the specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo EQ8500 (I think)
Nvidia 8600GTS
4GB DDR2 Ram @400mhz
300gb HDD.
480w PSU

The upgrade is going to cost a fair amount of money, and I would like to do it in small amounts. So here's the question, would I be better getting a GTX 780 and PSU first or the 3770k, Mobo and ram, using either Intergrated graphics or the 8600?

Solution
Motherboard, RAM, and CPU. Get a Haswell 4770K and use the integrated graphics for now. They are quite a bit better than Ivy Bridge and a big improvement over the 8600GTS.

Adding a 780 to what you have now wouldn't net you any performance increase.
Head on over to your favorite etailer and start fresh your system in the day was awesome if your going to do upgrades you need to start with a good board that will allow you to upgrade later haswell is here already on the intel side of the camp maybe a 4670 would be a good start and a good board to go with that but be sure your power supply is up to snuff to handle the new hardware. In the past I thrown money into older systems its not cost effective meaning you will never get out of it what you put into it ebay would be a good place to sale off your older parts.. board cpu first should be the buys mem then gpu if your power supply is good.
