I have an Acer M5-481PT that had windows 8 installed, but I formatted the HDD and installed windows 7. Now the brightness adjusting buttons do not work. Any help?

Did you install Windows 7 drivers from Acer's website?
If they don't have any for that model, there's the cause of your problem.
It's advisable to check the laptop maker's website for drivers BEFORE downgrading or upgrading the OS.
