Upgrade or Replace?

Hi,

My computer recently broke down. I am not exactly sure what happened but it would not turn on at all. Looking inside I saw that the there was no lights on on the motherboard and thought that my power supply blew out. So I replaced it. Now the power button on the motherboard lights up but it still doesn't turn on. I removed everything but the CPU and tried turning it on with no luck. My computer is 3 years old now, but it still runs pretty well. My question is should I replace the entire motherboard\CPU or find replacements for them (even though they are outdated).

My specs are:
Intel Core i7 950 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 3.06GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 4.8GT/S
OCZ Gold OCZ3G1333LV12G 12GB DDR3 3X4GB DDR3-1333 CL 9-9-9-20 1.65V Triple Channel
Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E
MSI X58M X58 mATX LGA1366

Solution
Try a couple of things first. Try and clear bios first

scroll down and you'll see a guide that show you how to remove and replace the jumper. Also try removing all you memory and try only one module in each slot. On my motherboard it wouldn't post first time unless there was only one stick in the 2nd slot.

Hi, what psu are you using? Are you getting any beeps from your motherboard speaker? If you replaced the psu and it still won't post then there is a chance that when your psu died it took your motherboard along for the ride. Looking at your motherboard I do not see any LED error indicators so trouble shooting could be a pita. Upgrading would be a better option at this point because the X58 series although still a decent gaming option is getting old. Good thing is there are a lot of upgrade options out there for you. The Z68 and Z77 paired with Sandy or Ivy Bridge processors still have a lot of life and gaming muscle and then there is the new Z87 boards paired with the latest Haswell line of processors. If on a budget I would personally go with the the Z77 motherboards because they support both the i5 2500K thru i7 2700K and the i5 3570 thru i7 3770K cpu's.

The new PSU I bought is the Antec High Current Pro 750W Modular Power Supply. No beeps or any sort of response from the motherboard when I try to power it on. I am not always up-to-date with the most current computer sockets\type but will my ram be compatible with these new socket type motherboards or will I have to replace that as well?

Oh, and thanks for the help. :)

You are right about the ram, it might not be compatible most LGA 1366 memory is triple channel but check the list. It may or may not work but if it works it will only work in dual channel. Triple channel memory will work on a dual channel motherboard. I have some of the same memory that I used on an Evga Classified motherboard before I upgraded. Antec is a good name PSU so no problems there.

I should get a new computer but I was completely happy with my current level of performance I was getting from my computer (I play mostly indie type games or catching up on games released 2 - 5 years ago). Which is why I was hoping to salvage parts if I could. I wasn't sure if I should try to buy a replacement motherboard, even though it is outdated. But I am not sure if anything was affected beyond the motherboard so I am hesitant to go that route. I will try out the RAM slots when I get home, I have already tried to clearing the CMOS (by removing the battery though, not the jumpers).

The thing is that LGA 1366 motherboards are getting hard to find unless you buy on used from one of the forums. Newegg only list 3 now, one is a EVGA Classified SR-2 - DUAL LGA 1366 and the other 2 are server motherboards. Tiger direct list only one. I have 2 LGA 1366 mobos but I have no socket 1366 compatible cpu to test them to make sure they work and they have been sitting a while.

So no luck with the RAM. Seems like I will be buying a new rig. I will check with MSI (seems like their site is down) and see if my parts are still under warranty or not. Anyways, thanks for all the help. I will likely hold off till December before I buy my new setup so I might be back then. :)
