RAM usage too high

I just bought a new hybrid computer yesterday, an HP Split X2 13. I notice that the RAM usage is high. It is 64 bit Windows 8 and has 4GB RAM. It always is using about 3GB of RAM, even when idle. If I run IE or Firefox it pushes up to about 75% or more. This seems odd to me. Shouldn't I have more RAM free?

Thanks!

Check out the Resource Monitor and look at the memory tab. You'll be able to see how your memory is being used. You're likely to see that a lot of that memory is in Standby.

You can try using RAMMap to get a more detailed breakdown of how the memory is being used.

Otherwise, look at what is using how much memory. I've noticed that Chrome seems to use a good 100 MB+ per tab that I have open. I have a lot of memory so this isn't an issue for me and I don't use IE or Firefox so I don't know whether the same symptoms are present there.

There might also be stuff just running that you don't realize. As an example, if you use Quickbooks, there's a crap load of processes that just run in the background that should close with the main program but don't (like Updaters).

"The "Modified" region, logically enough, holds data that has been modified. This can include data that needs to be written to disk. It can also include private mappings that have been modified that don't need to be written to disk.

"The "Standby" region contains information that may be used later but can also just be thrown away. It is thus standing by to be used immediately for a more important purpose should one come along. It may include pages that have been pre-zeroed so they can be used without having to fill them with zeroes. It can include pages that hold contents of files on disk that could be used to avoid having to read the files again."

Thanks for responding.

Yes I have looked at the RM and most of the RAM is marked in use. When using the task manager (TM), I cannot see anything using the RAM to that extent. According to TM I should have plenty available. I am talking about when the computer is idle too, I am not running anything other than what is in startup and its using 60% plus all the time. TM shows the 3GB usage on one tab but there doesn't seem to be any processes that are using much. Maybe < 500MB of RAM total in use by the processes listed.

I'd agree with the above.
"You're likely to see that a lot of that memory is in Standby."

Right click on you desktop - gadgets - cpu meter
It will also pull up a meter for ram.
With 8gb, I don't get much over 30% on the meter. Win 7 Pro.

Windows 8 Requires atleast 2GB of ram for the system itself and add 500MB of "Other" Processes and voila 2.5gb of 4gb = 75%.

Probably best to upgrade.

I just bought it yesterday, might have to return it. But I can't imagine that a new PC is set-up to use 60% + of its RAM when idle.

Just get a laptop with touchscreen and 8 gb ram, allot better value for the money.

And yes its perfectly possible for manufacturers to do that, 4gb is not much these days, esspecially when you buy something new and all the bloatware that comes with it as well.
