I have a ASUS UL30A series laptop, What I want to do is take of the windows 7 home and replace it with windows 7 premium. This should be straight forward but is it?
This model comes with so much stuff on it that it is a slow machine and a I think a lean win 7 premium would be much faster
Any help Please

so here are the differences between home and premium, going to premium will not make your computer faster. Find someone that has a home disc and reinstall the os using the key that came with the laptop. it will get rid of all the junk that was pre installed on the computer.

Memory support
Home Premium: 16GB of physical memory supported
Professional: 192GB of physical memory supported

Remote Desktop Host
Home Premium: No
Professional: Yes

Presentation Mode
Home Premium: No
Professional: Yes

Joining a domain
Home Premium: No
Professional: Yes

Windows XP Mode
Home Premium: No
Professional: Yes

Your actual problem is probably too much bloatware from ASUS, not which version of Windows 7 it is.
So, either you have Home Basic, Home Premium, or Professional.

You can download the relevant ISO from here:
http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/

Burn to a CD, reinstall, activate with the key on the bottom of the laptop.

NOTE: You need to save elsewhere ALL of your personal data. It may survive a clean install, but it may not. Better safe than sorry.

That would be the best bet. Plus that way you do not have to buy a new copy of Windows if you get the same version that is on your laptop you will get just Windows 7 with no bloatware.
