Intel 1155 Z77 or 1150 Z87?

I am looking to upgrade my very aged LGA 775 Mobo and CPU. However at this moment in time for a Mid-High end Gaming build, I assume it is going to be worth taking to Haswell generation over the Ivy-Bridge?

Assume I do not yet know whether I will upgrade the CPU again before 1150 socket is out dated, and assume I will overclock to an extent once the CPU begins to fall behind requirements.

Any opinions or suggestions from you, the experts?

Thank you in advance.

Hi. The short answer is if your budget will handle it, go straight to the 1150 socketed Haswell. With that, you will not be lagging behind anytime soon. If you are thinking of OCing at some point, then would need a "k " Processor. Either i5 4670k or i7 4770k AND a Motherboard with the Z87 chipset.

You can safely assume that you won't. Intel currently only lets their sockets last two generations, ie. two years. And the second generation on each socket is just a die shrink, ie. the performance difference will be minimal.

Just the answer I was looking for! Saves me more research seeing as I have already shortlisted down to an ASUS Maximus VI Hero and i5-4670K. Would these suit in your own opinion?

Thank you for clearing that up also, one less thing to worry about for two years! :D

Yep. Those would do fine. I went with the 17 4770k, but the 15 4670k is just as capable as far as I'm concerned. The motherboard is better than the one I used as I used the ASUS z87-Pro. :)

The 1155 socket consisted of the Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge ( Gen, 2 & 3 ). I suspect that the Ivy bridge at least, will still be viable for sometime to come.
