Motherboard or HDD issue??

So I have a custom-built system (see specs below).

The HDD and the ODD came from my previous system which was a pre-built HP (did that to save some money-was on a budget).

about 2 months ago, I went to play a DVD and while it opened and spun the disc it would not read it. This is where the problem started...

I checked the BIOS only to find out that no matter what SATA port it was plugged in to it is never detected. Sometimes, when I go to try the drive again after another method of troubleshooting I will get an "access denied" message upon trying to get the drive to read the disc.

To add insult to injury, I have recently had a problem with windows failing to load. I have Win 7 Home 64 bit (I THINK SP-1...). It will not go past the 'Starting Windows' screen, and startup repair comes up short every time. I cannot even get into Safe Mode anymore.

I have tried to update the BIOS, dis/re-connect all components, checked temps, voltages, connections, cables, driver updates, etc etc etc. I have done so much troubleshooting that I think if I applied to be tech support at any given company they would hire me on the spot! (joke lol)

I am out of options, and out of ideas. Oh...and don't even get me started on trying to contact support for my motherboard...twice now they have failed me (screw you, ASRock...).

I am down to the following possibilities:

1. the mobo is failing (bad SATA ports

2. old drives (HDD and ODD) are not compatible with the mobo

3. the hard drive is going bad (note: I have not heard any noises that would indicate as such, but you never know...)

4. Some combination of the above

I have since contacted some of the companies to get an RMA set up so those are still pending, but in the meantime, is there ANYTHING anyone can suggest I do (and preferably something that will NOT void any of my warranties)?

Grateful for any help I get. If I have missed giving any important information please let me know. Hoping I am as thorough and not-confusing as possible ;)

Thanks!

Actually, I think I did one just before. Got a virus that corrupted some files so i kinda had no choice. The odd thing is that windows was running just fine until I found the problem with the dvd drive. It just snowballed from there. Not sure if it's related, but it is peculiar.
