Do brands really matter with GPUs?

I want to buy a 7950 but I can't figure out which brand to get.. MSI, Asus, Sapphire, XFX etc etc

I go for which one has the most video memory and has better fans (2x).

Sapphire, Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI are usually in the top percent, followed by everyone else.

Yes.....not only brand but, just as with PSU's, the line within the brand is equally if not more important..... you'll oft see it posted that just buy any manufacturer's board an OC it yaself. But as ya can see here

How the card is constructed can matter greatly

-The EVGA 780 SC is a stock reference board with stick VRM

-The Gigabyte has custom PCB and beefed up VRM resulting in better core overclocks

-The MSI has custom PCB, really beefed up VRM, dual BIOS and voltage unlock capability

What was interesting in this review is that while the EVGA was limited by it's stock VRM / PCB as far as core overclocking, it did extremely well with memory overclocking. Whether this was just a lucky sample I have no way of knowing as I have never seen any other tests with the memory going that high.

You'll notice it's memory didn't do as well here with the 780:
